The
Name of the Rose - An Italian word meaning "in the highest."
A red
climber with bright yellow stamens, this is a very dramatic rose.
The canes become stiff quickly so if you intend to train it you must
do so while they are young. Left to its own devices, the canes will
shoot up vertically 9 or 10 feet (see the bottom photo at right).
This rose will produce more blooms if trained horizontally. I didn't
do this and sometimes regret it but, considering that I have it surrounded
on all sides by other plants, it still makes a beautiful showing with
flowers blooming at the top of the plant. From a distance, the blooms
look like a flock of scarlet birds. It repeats well and produces a
dramatic flush in late summer and fall when temperatures begin to
cool. Large orange hips appear in late fall. This is a highly rated
rose by the ARS and one that few people can resist.
