Chinese
Snowball
Viburnum macrocephalum
Mature
Height: 12 +
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast
Soil: Average, well-drained
Light Requirements: Sun/partial shade
Foliage: 2"-4" oval, oblong, light
green
Flower/Fruit: Large clusters of rounded flowers
in early spring, lime green changing to pure white
Pruning: None necessary but as unpruned shrubs
mature, flowers may begin to appear only at the upper portion
of the shrub. To help combat this, remove some of the older limbs
completely and cut a few back to 1/3. For a complete renewal,
it can be cut back to the ground immediately after flowering but
it is probabe that you wont' get any flowers the following year.
Hardy to Zone 6
Viburnums are excellent shrubs for the landscape and they can
become addictive. There are many varieties to choose from and
each has their own distinct characteristics. This particular variety
is quite the show-stopper with immense blooms (up to 8 inches)
that are start out lime green and mature to pure white. A very
early bloomer (mid to late March in my area). It can attain a
height of over 10 feet in five or six years. A very dramatic shrub.
