Perennial Sunflower (Helianthus multiflorus)

Hardy to Zone 5
Bloom Time - Late Summer - early Fall
Color - Yellow
Foliage - Ovate, slightly hairy, dark green (to 8 inches long)
Size - 4-5 ft.
Exposure - Full sun
Culture - Easy to grow in average soil, drought tolerant (but water regularly for best blooms), may need staking. Powdery mildew is common during rainy periods but it is usually not severe enough to threaten the plant.
Comments - Not to be confused with the annual sunflower, this variety returns faithfully each year. It grows in clumps and can be invasive. Mine mysteriously appeared one year (at the front of the border of course!) and I still can't remember where I obtained it. Be sure to place it at the back or middle of a border for best results. The beautiful flowers make excellent cut flowers and provide vivid color in the late summer when it is badly needed. Not necessarily a "neat" plant and may not be desired by those wanting immaculate looking gardens. On the other hand, it is not as messy looking as the tall seed head types.
