This
monster of a rose has a reputation for swallowing large structures
and smaller buildings. I selected it to to cover the north wall of
my house because of its vigor and ability to bloom in limited light.
I have it trained to a 15' tall trellis which it has easily outgrew
in just three years. In the first year (2000), growth was rapid but
there were few blooms. In subsequent years bloom has been nice but
never profuse.
The blooms
are single with five petals and of creamy yellow with golden stamens
in the center. The thorns are quite vicious and the large thick canes
are a pain to work with. They can even be dangerous if carelessly
handled. Thus, Mermaid is not a rose recommended for areas
of heavy traffic. It is best suited for large areas where is can ramble
freely. If you have an eyesore, like an old shed or woodpile, that
needs to be covered, Mermaid will do that for you. This rose
can easily grow to 30 or more feet wide and 20 feet high. Despite
its delicate appearing blooms, it is a rose to be reckoned with!
