This
is not one of my favorite rugosas and it has come close to becoming
a victim of shovel pruning on more than one occasion. It's not that
the flowers are ugly - the fragrant deep crimson blooms are quite
striking and glow like neon on a tall upright bush. I think my bush
resents its location (it is in the middle of a border and has to compete
with other shrubs) and would feel freer in an open location. Because
of this, growth is awkward and stiff. Blackspot is common and usually
defoliates the bush by summer's end. The flowers, although very pretty
and extremely fragrant, appear at the tips of the long canes, and
are not very profuse.
