This
delicate beauty was discovered growing in a cemetery in Natchitoches,
Louisiana.
It is a popular landscape rose in New Orleans because it is easy to
grow and stands up well to the hot conditions there. Debate goes on
as to whether it is a noisette or a china because it has characteristics
of both classes. If it is indeed a noisette, it could very well be
an early French variety which were developed as shrubs. Later, "tea
noisettes" were developed (by crossing the early noisettes with
teas) and this is where we find the beautiful but tender climbers
in the class.
Regardless
of the rose's history, it is a beautiful and well mannered specimen
that holds up well to conditions in the south. Flowers are a pink
blend and formed in airy clusters that rise above the foliage. Fragrance
is good but varies depending on the temperature. It is a healthy vigorous
shrub that needs little attention.
