Scotch broom
(Cytisus scoparius)

Scotch broom (Cytisus praecox)Hardy to Zone 5
Bloom Time - Early spring
Color - Yellow, white, pink, red
Foliage - Tall, slender stems with simple leaves
Size - 4-10 ft.
Exposure - Full sun
Soil - Does best in sandy or infertile soil
Culture - This is not a long-lived shrub and it will usually die out after several years. It is very beautiful though and is worthy of re-planting. The tall evergreen shrub is covered in early spring with beautiful pea-like flowers (the pink variety 'Hollandia' is shown at left). The flowers are good in arrangements and even the reed-like foliage can be used for fall arrangements or dried to use for wreaths. The plant is a fast grower and will attain heights of 8-10 feet. An average or sandy soil is okay but good drainage is a must.
