Name of the Rose - Jean-Maximilien Lamarque (1770-1832) was
a French general.
Lamarque
is one of the most beautiful and romantic roses in the world and it
was raised by an amateur hybridizer in his Angers, France window box!
Lovely mid-size blossoms of white tinged with lemon yellow adorn this
mannerly climber which looks spectacular trained to an archway. The
blooms nod downward and send out a strong fragrance that can be detected
at a distance. The foliage is a beautiful medium green, usually healthy,
and thorns are few.
This
rose is usually described as aggressive and fast growing. However,
it has taken several years to climb a modest archway for me. I'm not
sure if this is due to partial shade or just a bad plant. I had planned
to move it last year when it performed spectacularly for the first
time.
Lamarque
is truly a rose for Southern gardens because it loves the heat. In
addition to archways, it looks wonderful against a brick wall and
would make a lovely addition to a courtyard.
