Joseph
Pemberton crossed the Polyantha-Noisette hybrid 'Trier' with
Hybrid Tea roses to develop the hybrid musk roses. 'Moonlight'
and 'Danae' were the first two introduced to the public in
1913.
'Moonlight'
grows into a beautiful five to six feet cascading shrub which becomes
smothered with sprays of musk scented, cream-colored blooms with bright
yellow stamens in May. Repeat bloom in the fall is very good. The
leaves are glossy dark green and very healthy. This is one of the
most disease resistant roses in my garden. I have two plants of Moonlight
- one grows in a border and the other is located in a shadier area
and is compacted by other roses and shrubs. The border plant (shown
at the right), which is allowed to cascade openly, is the most beautiful
of the two. This rose can also be easily trained on a pillar or a
tripod.
