Trees
and shrubs should be the first plants to consider if you
are just starting your garden. Those who garden for a living will
be the first to say that it's the trees and shrubs that set the
foundations of their work, and this is why developing it is such
an integral part of their jobs.
These plants will provide the overall structure for your garden
and you can fill in with perennials, annuals or roses later. If
you already have some trees on your property, try and visualize
how you can integrate them into your plan.
Trees
also provide an invaluable service as they provide much needed
shade. By the time June rolls around and the heat and humidity
set in, you will be thankful for them. There are so many beautiful
trees to grow in the South and they can range in size from massive
magnolias to the smaller ornamental trees. Trees are best planted
while they are dormant. I have found that January and February
is the best planting time.
Shrubs
are wonderful and I simply cannot imagine a garden without them.
They serve so many functions - they add structure to the garden
and variety to borders, as well as create screens to achieve
some privacy. Some shrubs are noteworthy for their flowers while
others are admirable for their foliage, berries or fall color.
Some are useful in flower arrangements and Christmas decorations
while others can serve as a grand focal point in the garden.
And, of course, one cannot overlook the all important foundation
plantings! Azaleas and camellias are synonymous with the South
but they are by no means the only shrubs to grow here.
