This is a
real dud in my garden and every year I contemplate shovel pruning it. It
starts out beautifully, usually producing a few lovely blooms in early
spring, but it quickly goes down-hill from there. Blackspot attacks
immediately with the onset of hot weather and the poor thing is usually
totally defoliated by mid-summer. Of course I don't spray my roses that
often so if you are inclined to spend a lot of time with the sprayer,
you might have different results but I doubt it. I'm afraid this is just
not a rose for southern gardens.
There are
other faults as well. The blooms ball in wet weather and they are not a
pretty sight. The growth habit of the rose is also very awkward and it
needs lots of room to spread. I suspect that pegging would be a good
practice if you have the room as blooms are not usually profuse. And,
not only is blackspot a problem, but mildew can be expected as
well!
