Aquilegia
canadensis (Wild Columbine)
Hardy to Zone 3
Bloom Time - April through June
Color - Yellow and red
Foliage - Frilly multi-petaled leaves at the base of
the plant - flowers are borne on tall leafless stalks
Size - 1-2 ft.
Exposure - Full sun or shade
Culture - This beautiful native flower reminds me of
a flock of exotic birds and indeed the word columbine means
"dovelike" in Latin. If you use your imagination,
the flowers resemble a circle of birds drinking from a cup.
Wild columbine is easy to grow and will reseed year after
year. It is well suited in a shady woodland area but will
do just as well in a sunny border. It is not fussy about soil
type but good drainage is a must.
